- Prerequisites
- ZD_06 Math and Physics && ZD_10 Theory of signals && ZD_15 Audio technology I
The knowledge of basic laws and quantities in electrical circuits is required as well as the knowledge of the characteristics of electric circuit elements, periodical and non-periodical signal spectra, and basic knowledge in the area of continuous- and discrete-time systems. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Sound Design and Multimedial Technology (programme FF, N-ZVUK_) (3)
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the chain of processing acoustic signals from their origination through their transformation into electric signals and back to acoustic signals up to the listener's final perception.
- Learning outcomes
- After course completion, students are to:
- explain the physiology of hearing, including binaural auditory perception,
- operate sound meters and use them for noise measurements and for electroacoustic measurements,
- characterize the acoustic properties of closed spaces, measure the reverberation time,
- describe types of microphones and their properties, parameters and characteristics,
- describe the properties of the used constructions of direct and indirect radiating loudspeakers,
- describe the types of headphones and their construction,
- characterize sound systems for small and large spaces, describe the principles of stereophonic and multi-channel reproduction. - Syllabus
- 1. Sound waves: quantities of the sound field, basic types of waves, types of sound fields, addition and subtraction of sound pressure levels. 2. Physiological acoustics: hearing organ, frequency analysis in the inner ear, masking, sound source localization. 3. Measurement of acoustic quantities: broadband sound analysis, weighting filters, constant-percentage band analysis, sound level meter, calibration of measurement chain. 4. Acoustics of closed spaces: propagation of sound through the environment, reverberation time, measurement of reverberation time, normative requirements, acoustic absorbing, reflective and diffusion elements. 5. Electromechanical transducers: transducers using electromagnetic and electrostatic fields, construction of electromagnetic, electrodynamic, electrostatic and piezoelectric transducer. 6. Microphones: gradient acoustic receivers, directional receivers, microphone construction, electrical interface and microphone parameters. 7. Loudspeakers: loudspeaker as a mechanical system, electrodynamic, electrostatic and piezoelectric loudspeaker, indirect radiating loudspeakers, characteristics and parameters of loudspeakers. 8. Loudspeaker systems: loudspeakers as an acoustic system, open, closed and bass-reflex loudspeakers, band-pass and transmission line loudspeakers, loudspeaker crossovers, loudspeaker system parameters. 9. Headphones: types of headphones, simulation of acoustic impedance of the ear, construction of electrodynamic, electromagnetic and electrostatic headphones, parameters of headphones. 10. Sound reinforcement basics: sound reinforcement in small spaces, stereophonic and multi-channel reproduction, sound reinforcement in large spaces, acoustic feedback and its suppression.
