Course objectives
The course objective is to deepen students' knowledge of academic English. This will be done through topics which are relevat to students' fields of study. In the course, students work with authentic scientific texts through which they will improve their vocabulary and grammar. The course gives an emphasis to communication skills which will be practised in discussions, talks, small group work / pair work and presentations. In the course, students will listen to and/or watch podcasts and videos with topics related to science. The course also aims at improving students' writing skills, namely writing an abstract to a scientific paper. Other genres of academic/scientific writing will be practised as well.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, students will be able to: understand authentic scientific texts at B2 level of CEFR, understand spoken discourse concerning specialized topics at B2 level of CEFR, and communicate on an academic topic of interest. In presentation skills, students will become aware of the diversity of the needs of a specific audience in order to be able to adapt their presentations and mediate the insights into discipine-specific concepts. Besides, they will get experience with the role of the moderator of a student conference. In writing skills, they will be able to apply the academic principles of the given genres, namely the abstract and the essay.

After the completion of the course the student should be able to:
understand authentic chemical texts at B2 level of CEFR
understand spoken discourse concerning chemical topics at B2 level of CEFR
communicate on a special topic at B2 level of CEFR

formulate the main ideas of the text
distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information

apply the acquired skills to new chemical topics
Learning outcomes
On completing the course the student will be able to adapt the content and style of a presentation according to a specific occasion, will be aware of detailed criteria of evaluting spoken production, will have peer-feedback skills - giving and accepting feedback, and discussion skills - asking polite contextualized questions and respond to them. Next, the student will be able to write a structured abstract of a research article and also write a paragraph comparing two phenomena. In grammar, the student will be able to give recommendations (should, had better), reproduce advice (verb patterns, e.g. he suggested -ing),form indirect questions, use modal verbs and infinitive structures for expressing probability, use if-clauses for hypothesizing, and report direct speech.

Cílem výuky je rozvinout schopnosti studenta prezentovat výsledky vlastního výzkumu na mezinárodním fóru a sledovat nejnovější poznatky ve studovaném oboru.

  • Obecné cíle: 1. rozvinout mluvní dovednosti potřebné pro komunikaci v situacích typických pro oblast vědy 2. rozvinout čtecí dovednosti tak, aby se studenti vypořádali i se složitějšími autentickými odbornými texty 3. rozvinout poslechové dovednosti tak, aby umožnily studentům porozumět odbornému textu 4. rozvinout dovednost psát tak, aby studenti dovedli sestavit žánry (typy textů) typické pro oblast vědy 5. seznámit studenty se základní odbornou terminologií 6. zopakovat a prohloubit znalost gramatiky v nových kontextech Obecné úkoly: Studenti 1. se naučí, jak popsat proces, systém, jak vyjádřit příčinu a následek, jak interpretovat grafy, jak přednést akademickou prezentaci 2. si dále prohloubí dovednosti uvedené v sylabu akademické angličtiny pod bodem 1. 3. se naučí, jak si dělat poznámky ze slyšeného textu 4. se naučí, jak psát žádost o zaměstnání, formální a neformální dopis, laboratorní zprávu, abstrakt, odborný článek 5. prohloubí si znalost odborné terminologie 6. upevní si znalost gramatiky Hodnocení: 1 písemný zápočtový test za semestr

Cílem výuky je rozvinout schopnosti studenta prezentovat výsledky vlastního výzkumu na mezinárodním fóru a sledovat nejnovější poznatky ve studovaném oboru.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Obecné cíle: 1. rozvinout mluvní dovednosti potřebné pro komunikaci v situacích typických pro oblast vědy 2. rozvinout čtecí dovednosti tak, aby se studenti vypořádali i se složitějšími autentickými odbornými texty 3. rozvinout poslechové dovednosti tak, aby umožnily studentům porozumět odbornému textu 4. rozvinout dovednost psát tak, aby studenti dovedli sestavit žánry (typy textů) typické pro oblast vědy 5. seznámit studenty se základní odbornou terminologií 6. zopakovat a prohloubit znalost gramatiky v nových kontextech Obecné úkoly: Studenti 1. se naučí, jak popsat proces, systém, jak vyjádřit příčinu a následek, jak interpretovat grafy, jak přednést akademickou prezentaci 2. si dále prohloubí dovednosti uvedené v sylabu akademické angličtiny pod bodem 1. 3. se naučí, jak si dělat poznámky ze slyšeného textu 4. se naučí, jak psát žádost o zaměstnání, formální a neformální dopis, laboratorní zprávu, abstrakt, odborný článek 5. prohloubí si znalost odborné terminologie 6. upevní si znalost gramatiky Hodnocení: 1 písemný zápočtový test za semestr
