Prerequisites
The target group for this seminar are the students working on a bachelors or masters thesis in the field of ecology or biosystematics of terrestrial invertebrates. Participation of doctoral students and the department's teachers working in this field is also assumed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.

Course objectives
The seminar provides the students with topical information on and the possibility to discuss research in the given field going on at the Department of Botany and Zoology (and further institutions with similar scope), on bachelor, master and doctoral theses (worked on or planned by the seminar participants), on fundamental methodological issues, on experience gained during study stays at other institutions, on basic approaches as well as on novel trends in the field, and on the possibilities of work in the field after graduation. The main objectives are to 1) get a broad overview of basic approaches and methods used to study various aspects of the biology and ecology of terrestrial invertebrates (exceeding the scope of ones own research project); 2) to get an overview of research topics of institutions (mainly the domestic ones) working in the given field; 3) to acquire the ability to follow a technical lecture and to participate in a technical discussion (for instance asking questions) both in Czech and English; and 4) to acquire (get to know and practise) the skills of presenting own research projects and their results as well as the results of desk-top studies (literature search etc.) according to the practice established in the field (concisely, clearly and catching the attention of the audience) both in Czech and English. These objectives are to be reached in a gradual process by participating in the seminar over several semesters.
Syllabus
  • The seminar synopsis is subject to change in dependence on the composition of its participants, their needs and how advanced they are. A fundamental part of the programme are presentations of the participants, in the first place: introductions to their own bachelor, master of doctoral thesis - introducing objectives and background; interim reports on the course of work and the results obtained so far; presentations of the completed theses as a preparatory step for the official thesis defense procedure; presentations of talks to be given or already given at scientific meetings. Each presentation is followed by a discussion (regarding content and form) and is also usually preceded by a tutorial with the head of the seminar or the thesis supervisor. Members of the Research Group, who have not enrolled in the course (teachers, researchers, doctoral students) present their research in a corresponding way. Another substantial part of the seminar are lectures of members of the Research Group or the Department, and of invited guests from other institutions (domestic and foreign) devoted to various topics of terrestrial invertebrate research. Additional parts of the programme are for instance excursions to other institutions (e.g. the Entomological Dept. of the Moravian Museum).

Lectures of invited specialists. Class discussion.
Assessment methods
Credits are given for active participation in the seminar. Participants should not be absent more than twice per semester and should take part in discussions as well as preparing and presenting own talks (papers) on agreed topics.
