- Course objectives
- The course aims to provide the first contact of the “Environment & Health“ students with real field methods for environmental studies.
- Learning outcomes
- After this course, the student will be able to:
- to characterize the activity of the CHMI observatory and describe its measuring equipment
- to perform hydrological and hydrobiological sampling, to recognize basic types of organisms
- to sample soil and soil biota, to recognize basic types of organisms, to describe the soil profile and to interpret the pedological probe
- to take an air sample
- to perform a phytocaenosis survey and identify the basic plant species
- to discuss various aspects of field techniques - Syllabus
- Day 1: arrival, accommodation, getting acquainted with the content of the field trip
- 1st day afternoon: introduction of the observatory and its methods for environmental quality monitoring
- 2nd - 5th day: thematic areas "soil, water, air" during which the students in the half-day blocks will learn the following topics:
- Soil:
- a) soil survey and soil sampling
- (b) Soil and soil biota sampling, soil invertebrates determination c) Phytocaenosis survey and bioindication with plants
- Water:
- (a) the collection and identification of aquatic animals
- b) sampling of flowing and standing water
- c) sediment collection
- (d) collection and determination of algae and cyanobacteria
- Air:
- (a) air emissions - active and passive sampling
- b) monitored air quality parameters

- Week stay at Kosetice observatory of Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. All day terrain exercises with visiting experts. Independent work on submitted tasks. Creating final report.
