Course objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

understand authentic mathematical texts/lectures
identify the main ideas
formulate the main ideas
interpret the information
present mathematical topics using basic presentation techniques
summarize a mathematical text
compare and contrast
use arguments in a discussion on a mathematical topic (defend one´s opinion, opose, support arguments of a colleague)
present one´s research using advanced presentation techniques
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student should be able to:
understand authentic mathematical texts at B2 level of CEFR
understand spoken discourse concerning mathematical topics at B2 level of CEFR
communicate on a special topic at B2 level of CEFR
skim the text and understand its general meaning
scan the text and find a piece of specific information
formulate the main ideas of the text
distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information
summarize relevant information
inform about one´s studies and research
present the results of one´s research
apply the acquired skills to new mathematical topics
Syllabus
  • Syllabus of the course: 1.Texts from mathematics and other related fields according to current importance and interest (requisite vocab) 2.General math texts (requisite vocab) 3.Open courseware lecture materials and video lectures predominantly from MIT or TED. 4. Writing abstracts for a scientific conference 5. Preparation of a presentation for a scientific conference 6. Organizing a scientific conference

Teaching methods
