Course objectives
The lecture covers fundamentals of X-ray crystallography, X-ray diffraction methods, and X-ray structure analysis.
Syllabus
  • 1. Lattice, space lattice, unit cell, lattice parameters, lattice lines and planes

    2. Symmetry of crystals, symmetry operations, proper and improper rotation axes, point groups, crystal morphology

    3. Symetry of lattice, plane lattices, interaction of a plane lattice with rotation axis, space lattices, Bravais lattices, axial system, crystal systems, Laue groups, Friedel's law

    5. Space groups, srew axes, glide planes, deduction of space groups and their graphical representation, International tables, space groups and crystal structure

    6. X-rays, generation, monochromatization, sources, safety

    7. Interaction of X-rays with crystal lattice, Laue equation, Bragg's law , reciprocal lattice, reciprocal lattice and Bragg's law

    8. Interaction of X-rays with crystal structure, structure factor, atomic scattering factor, systematic absences, space group determination from systematic absences

    9. Intensity od diffraction , primary and secondary extinction, absorption, thermal movement, multiplicity

    10. Powder diffraction methods, Debye-Scherrer, Guinier-de Wolff, high and low-temperature cameras, high-pressure cameras, powder diffractometer

    11. Interpretation of powder diagrams, indexing, calculation of lattice parameters

    12. Practical aspects of powder methods, qualitative and quantitative phase analysis, determination of particle size, measurement of elastic tension in metals, preferred orientation, non-crystalline materials

    13. Single crystal diffraction methods, Laue method, precession method, Weissenberg method and its modifications, single-crystal diffractometer

    14. Fundamentals of X-ray structure analysis, intensity measurement, data reduction, phase problem and its solution, electron density function, refinement of structural model

    15. Interpretation of structures, equality of interatomic bonds and angles, hydrogen bonds, intermolecular contacts
