Syllabus
  • 1. The oldest known cold climatic fluctuations – basic characteristic of Quaternry period; pre-Pleistocene cold climatic oscilations – Antarctica; beginning of Quaternary period; causes of climatic changes (Milankovich theory; supplemenntary factors)
  • 2. Natural environment in Quaternary – Quaternary river systém in North Europe and influence of climate changes on the development of river systém; Quaternary climatic cycle and its stages; Quaternary climatic fluctuations of the I., II., and III..order; development of Quaternery flora – Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary; development of flora during glacial and interglacial periods.
  • 3. Pleistocene fauna in Europe – development of European mammal fauna at the end of the Pliocene and at the beginning of Pleistocene; Equus-Mammuthus and Wolf events; development of fauna in Pleistocene, examples; climatic indicators – examples of typical interglacial/glacial faunal assemblage.
  • 4. Genetic types of Quaternary deposits and their classification I – glacial deposits, horizontal and vertical division of the continental glacial systém; tills – their character, origin and classification – primary tills and their classification; secondary tills and their classification; glacifluvial deposits; glacilacustrine deposits.
  • 5. Genetic types of Quaternary deposits and their classification II – aeolian deposits – loess, loess complexes, aeolian sands; slope (colluvial) deposits; alluvial deposits – alluvial fans and fluvial deposits, basic geomorphological phenomena – floodplain, point-bar, crevasse channels, levee splay; limnic deposits; fenny (paludal) and bog deposits; cave deposits
  • 6. Periglacial processes and relief – definition of periglacial area; permafrost, definition and division, occurrences of permafrost; cryogenous structures – ice wedges and their origin; frost polygons and their classification; cryotubration.
  • 7. Glacial relief – moraine, kame and kame terrace; hummocky moraine; dead ice; roches moutonnées; drumlin; trog (glacier valley); nunatak.
  • 8. Dating of Quaternary deposits – radiometric methods, dendrochronology, vqarve chronology, palaeomagnetism, oxygen isotopes (OIS-curve).
  • 9. Quaternary stratigraphy – global chronostratigraphic chart of Quaternary period; Pleistocene chronostratigraphy in the area of continental glaciations (Northwestern Europe) and mountain (Alpine) glaciations; Holocene stratigraphy.
  • 10. Eeemian Interglacial and Visla Glaciation - natural environment, climatic characterization, vegetation, important localities.
