Cíle předmětu
New and emerging compounds – overview and case studies. The environmental occurrence of trace organic compounds such as pesticides, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and hormones, and their potential adverse effects on aquatic and terrestrial life and on human health is an issue that concerns not only scientist and engineers but also the general public. Such ‘emerging’ trace organic compounds are being found with increasing frequency in the environment on a global scale. Research has shown that there is wide diffuse sources and pathways for these compounds to enter the environment. Detection for emerging organic compounds in the environment continue to be refined and detection levels continue to become ever lower. This has lead to the documented presence of many emerging compounds in every environmental compartment. Many of these new contaminates have been detected in remote regions removed from point sources, including the arctic. Case studies to be presented are: • Brominated flame retardants including PBDEs in the Canadian Great Lakes and Arctic and other replacement BFRs. • Currently used pesticides in the Canadian environment, including pentachloronitrobenzene, chlorothalonil, chloropyrifos and dacthal. • Emerging compounds in under the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling network. • Perfluoro-compounds. • An overview of Canada’s ‘Chemical Management Plan’ and the development of the Domestic Substance List.
