Introductory information / Instructions

The Master of International Relations and European Politics (IREP Mgr.) is studied at the Department of International Relations and European Studies of the FSS MU as an English-language single-subject full-time master's program.

The study is governed by the MU Study and Examination Regulations and the FSS Study Standards. Studying is credit type. Credits (ECTS) are obtained by completing individual subjects. Compulsory subjects are the basis of the study program and must be completed during the course of study.

Students are eligible to apply for a final state examination in the IREP Mgr. program if they have gained a total of 120 ECTS, of which 58 ECTS are for compulsory courses, 22 ECTS for diploma theses, and 40 ECTS for optional courses which constitute a mandatory segment where students choose courses according to their preference and field of expertise at a minimum of 40 ECTS. 

Students may also choose to substitute a part of this minimum by enrolling in out-of-department optional courses (C) offered by other university departments. Only 12 ECTS credits from such courses count toward the necessary 40 ECTS minimum (C -> B). Subjects of other programs are part of the offer of compulsory subjects of the IREP program only if they are explicitly listed in the registration templates and can award ECTS only if they are completed in the semester for which they were listed in the IREP program.

Furthermore, students must fulfill university requirements for minimal language competency (4 credits from Block 2) and successfully pass one practical subject (4 credits from Block 3) both counting toward the 40 ECTS for optional courses.

The standard length of the Master's degree program in full-time study is 4 semesters.

The study is completed by a defense of the diploma thesis and a state final examination.

Diploma Thesis

The thesis defense forms an integral part of the state exam. The minimum character count of the Master’s thesis is between 20,000 and 26,000 words on 60-80 pages of text (including footnotes, front-page, contents, index, bibliography, and annotation).

Optional courses (B) constitute a mandatory segment where students choose courses according to their preference and field of expertise at a minimum of 40 ECTS.

Students may also choose to substitute a part of this minimum by enrolling in out-of-department optional courses (C) offered by other university departments. Only 12 ECTS credits from such courses count toward the necessary 40 ECTS minimum (C -> B).

Furthermore, students must fulfill university requirements for minimal language competency (4 credits from Block 2) and successfully pass one practical subject (4 credits from Block 3) both counting toward the 40 ECTS for optional courses.

Refresher courses are optional courses offered to students from outside the department wishing to catch up on selective aspects of previous education in Block 4.
