Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis
Examination:
The dissertation examination takes place in the fourth semester of study. It includes preparation for 3 selected questions related to the topic of the PhD student's dissertation. Emphasis is placed primarily on the recent examination of sources and the methodology of working with them.
The examination includes a discussion of the submitted text that will form part of the dissertation. This will be a minimum of 50 standard pages of text, from which it must be clear that the PhD student has a clearly stated research aim and can defend its methodology.
Defence of doctoral thesis:
The thesis must be in a world language; exceptions are only permitted by the departmental board.
Together with the dissertation, students hand in the autoreferate that has been, in the ideal case, successfully presented in front of an audience, e. g. at a conference organized for doctoral students home or abroad. The autoreferate is drawn up in writing and in accord with general rules of doctoral programmes of the Faculty.
The doctoral state exam consists of the thesis defence and the student's answers to questions related to broader topics, with which the student is familiarized in advance.
Requirements of the study
During their studies, students will publish three articles and a review in peer reviewed scholarly journals. At least one article must be in a world language, published outside Masaryk University and in an internationally respected journal or proceedings published by an internationally respected publishing house.
They will attend (actively) at least one foreign and one domestic conference.
They will teach two hours a week during at least one semester.
Part-time students are allowed to fulfill certain obligations in an alternative way in agreement with the Doctoral Board - for more information see the instructions in templates and in the syllabi of particular courses.
