Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis
Together with the dissertation, students hand in the autoreferate that has been, in the ideal case, successfully presented in front of an audience, e. g. at a conference organized for doctoral students home or abroad. The autoreferate is drawn up in writing and in accord with general rules of doctoral programmes of the Faculty.
The doctoral state exam consists of the thesis defence and the student's answers to questions related to broader topics, with which the student is familiarized in advance.
The content of the state doctoral exam is subject to change based on the topic of the student's dissertation, it nevertheless always include questions related to ancient history or the intermediate period between Prehistory and Antiquity in the main cultural areas, and the intermediate period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
An overview of Antiquity's main characteristics (state, society, thought), of ancient studies' methodology, of ancient period's cultural benefits is particularly required.
Requirements of the study
During their studies, students will publish two articles and a review in peer reviewed scholarly journals.
They will attend (actively) at least one foreign or domestic conference.
They will complete one internship abroad of at least 1 month.
They will teach two hours a week during at least one semester.

Jazyková příprava - pramenný jazyk
Studenti doktorského studia Dějiny starověku mají povinnost absolvovat 4 semestry výuky pramenného jazyka podle vlastní volby (latina/klasická řečtina/akkadština). Povinnost absolvovat kurzy pramenného jazyka neplatí pro absolventy klasické filologie, hebraistiky a orientalistiky a pro ty, kdo splnili alespoň 4 semestry jednoho z nabízených pramenných jazyků v rámci předchozího studia na Masarykově univerzitě. V těchto případech si doktorští studenti zapisují podle potřeby doktorské práce (po dohodě se školitelem) buď jiný pramenný jazyk, anebo předmět DSDPJ Pramenný jazyk - komentovaný překlad.
