Geologist helps both society and nature

Degree programme objectives

The follow-up Master's study programme of Applied and Environmental Geology is intended for students planning to work in a common geological company environment (environmental geology, hydrogeology and engineering geology and economic geology). The programme is aimed at completing Master's degree in any form of the studies: full-time and part-time (combined). It also covers mentioned applied areas of specialization, a practical course and courses linked to preparing Master's thesis.

The goal of the studies in the follow-up Master's degree programme is to consolidate and deepen, irrespective of the chosen study programme, education gained in the previous Bachelor's degree programme and get professional qualifications in geology. The graduates are qualified to work independently and creatively in geological branches as theoreticians, practical geologists or educators.

The study program of Geology prepares highly educated specialists in geological branches, such as environmental geology, geophysics, geochemistry, historical geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, magmatic and metamorphic petrology, palaeontology, quarternary geology and karsology, regional geology, sedimentary geology, soil mechanics and tectonics.

  • Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • independently solve specific practical geological problems (setting solution procedures, processing scientific literature and data sources, choice of methodology, analysis of results, drawing conclusions)
    • demonstrate deep knowledge of practical disciplines according to their specializations (economic geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, environmental geology)
    • write a research paper based on their own research and present the results of the research at an adequate level both orally and in a written form
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The graduates are expected to find employment especially in specialized geological companies, in institutes applying geological knowledge to practical needs (such as environmental departments etc.).

  • Practical Training

Students get practical training according to their choice of courses, one-week practical course is obligatory.

  • Goals of Theses

In the Mastr's thesis, the student demonstrates the ability to independently solve the problem of adequate difficulty, including work with literature, the processing and interpretation of the results and their presentation.

The student has the right to propose the topic of his/her thesis on the topics listed for the given study program or outside of this offer, if the supervisor agrees to do so and lists the proposed topic. Topics of the final thesis are approved by the director of the department.

The thesis includes literature thesis, i.e. a sufficiently good written summary of the current state of published knowledge about the topic on the basis of primary sources (i.e. scientific articles) including the list of cited literature.

The data used for the Master's thesis should be obtained by field or laboratory research, exceptionally can be taken over. The data must be creatively elaborated and interpreted in such a way that the Master's thesis brings new discovery.

The formal content of the Master's thesis is determined by the Dean's regulations. The extent of the core of the final thesis (i.e. the text and figures of the chapters between the Introduction to the Conclusions inclusive) must not exceed 50 pages. The minimum extent of work is not defined.

  • Access to Further Studies

Graduates can pursue their studies in doctoral degree programmes.
