Degree programme objectives

The objective of the Zoology programme is to gain current knowledge in the field of animal biology particularly in their systematic, evolution and ecology. Detailed knowledge are provided in the field of invertebrate and vertebrate biology, hydrobiology and parasitology. To get a practical experience with the field or laboratory research and skills to interpret data on general knowledge of current state of art by using modern analytical methods are another programme aim. Although, the tutorial emphasises Central European fauna, skills and learned methods are graduates able to apply to any ecosystem or fauna of the globe.

  • Objectives

    The objective of the Zoology programme is to gain current knowledge in the field of animal biology particularly in their systematic, evolution and ecology. Detailed knowledge are provided in the field of invertebrate and vertebrate biology, hydrobiology and parasitology.   • Learning Outcomes

    After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • understand and describe general laws of macroecology, animal community and population ecology
    • understand basic principles of evolution from molecules to organisms, including humans and their cultures
    • explaine current knowledge of phylogeny and system of invertebrate or vertebrate animals, evolution of their organ systems and developmental morphology
    • understand and apply knowledge on autecology of selected animal taxa, particularly those from Central Europe
    • master a wide range of field and laboratory methods based on their specialization
    • summarize state of art on particular phenomenon and to define lacks of knowledge based on scientific, mostly English written, literature
    • apply statistical methods to asses a wide range of data (e.g. morphological, faunistic, ecological, and genetic) by using current and relevant methods
    • able to interpret the achieved results and to put them into a framework of general theories and hypotheses, along with the ability of defending these results in front of scientific audience
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

    The graduates of this study programme are prepared to get a job at departments of biological faculties, institutes of the Academy of Sciences, state institutes of applied sciences (agriculture and forestry), agencies of nature conservation and environmental management, private companies conducting surveys in nature conservation, natural history museums, Zoos, etc.

    This type of education provides suitable conditions for a following postgraduate study in the fields of Ecology, Hydrobiology, Parasitology, and Zoology at the Department of Botany and Zoology at our faculty or in similar filed at other Czech or foreign universities.
