My presentation will discuss the experiment Material artifact as a mean of concretization of ritual sequence which I prepare in collaboration with Kristoffer L. Nielbo and Jesper Soerensen of Aarhus University. The study aims to explore the impact of material instruments on our ability to represent the perceived actions. General assumption is that the correspondence of function of a object with situation of use helps to routinize the conduct or representations of given action. On contrary the use of object against its intended function increases focus and attention on the material object itself hence lowers down the ability to memorize other parts of presented action. Apart of general theoretical introduction to the issue and its possible impact on understanding of religious ritual, I would like to mainly discuss the practical affairs that are connected to the preparation and administration of the entire project. From the way we prepared the experimental stimuli and reason we did so to the types of dependent measures and experimental paradigm behind the study. The presentation will portray the whole process as a gradual development over many steps of trials that eventually came to the point when the study is ready for piloting.
