Abstract

En 2009 Susana Fortes publica la novela Esperando a Robert Capa, contribuendo así a la larga lista de obras dedicadas a esta temática. En la «Nota de la autora», la escritora confiesa que uno de los mayores impulsos que le llevaron a ponerse a escribir la historia de Gerda Taro -personaje histórico real que protagoniza su novela-, era una imagen concreta. Se trata de una foto descubierta hace relativamente poco en México junto con otros negativos. En la foto sacada por el famoso fotoreportero de guerra Robert Capa, aparce su novia -también fotógrafa- Gerda Taro. En la novela la autora reconstruye los acontecimientos más importantes de la vida de la «pequeńa rubia», como la solían llamar los soldatos republicanos, mientras ella con su cámara captaba imágenes que hasta hoy día forman una valiosa y extensa fotodocumentación de la Guerra Civil espańola. Dicha reconstrucción de los acontecimientos históricos reales -tanto de la vida de Gerda Taro como de la Guerra Civil-, se apoya en estudios históricos, textos y documentos, pero ante todo en las imágenes. En esta relación cabe seńalar que la palabra imagen figura aquí en varios sentidos y significados. En primer lugar con frecuencia y con una minuciosidad que permite la identificación, Fortes hace referencia a las imágenes materiales, i.e. a las fotos realizadas por Gerda Taro y Robert Capa y otros fotógrafos famosos de la época. Por lo tanto resulta interesante observar cómo el método fotográfico se convierte en un procedimiento con el que se están elaborando otras imágenes visuales que forman la base de las descripciones de todo lo visto, vivido y evocado por los personajes.

Abstract (in English)

The number of literary works dedicated to the Spanish Civil War has been growing recently to the extent that those tragic three years now represent one of the most frequent topics in contemporary literature. In 2009, the Spanish writer Susana Fortes published her novel Waiting for Robert Capa (Esperando a Robert Capa), contributing thus to the long list of titles dealing with the topic of war. Without resigning to a poetic license, the author created a fictitious literary reconstruction of key moments in the lives of two famous photographers, Gerda Taro and Robert Capa, whose snapshot collections are even today recognized as a valid and extensive testimony of everyday life in the period of the Spanish Civil War. This literary reconstruction of real historical events concerning both the lives of the photographers and the Civil War is based on a research into historical studies, texts, written documents and on graphic material in particular. It should be emphasized that in this novel, the photographs are very important. Throughout the story, the novelist constantly makes references to different snapshots taken by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and other renowned photographers of that time. These references are so detailed that the identification of the alluded pictures is made easy. It is also interesting to analyze how methods normally used in graphic arts are applied on narrative processes, creating numerous visual images that form a background to all that is viewed, experienced or recorded by the protagonists of the novel.
