N2 - Based on the representative survey “Ageism” collected in three waves (2003, 2007 and 2012) among adult population of Czech Republic, we will present the data on age salience in Czech society, on perceived age discrimination in field of employment, health care provision and extreme forms of age discrimination – elder abuse and mistreatment. We will argue that the definition of old age is being increasingly tightened with both health- and mental deterioration, and with chronological age. At the same time, the increase in share of older people within society is believed to bring negative consequences not only to areas such as pension or health care systems, but to lower the living standard and worsen the attitudes towards older people. However, the comparison between the three survey years also shows that there is rather minor change in the share of people actually experiencing any given form of age discrimination and that there are other actors and attitudes shaping agents involved, namely the media and economic recession seem to be the most pronounced ones.
