An analysis of traffic accidents on roads was performed by using statistical approach based on Monte Carlo simulations. We took the advantage of the fact that since 2006 all traffic accidents recorded by the police are being localized by GPS. Our method is capable to determine whether the accidents on a road section are distributed randomly or not. In the latter case the method identifies clusters of accidents and specifies their strengths and statistical significances. By using this novel approach we identified clusters of traffic accidents with animals on the Czech road network. For all the accidents in selected localities we obtained data specifying species of the killed animals. Further aim of study was field monitoring of mortality of small vertebrates, which are usually not mentioned in police databases. Monitoring ran from April to November 2012 at three different localities of roads with different habitat (field - forest, field - field, forest - forest). All localities were divided into main and reference sections, where several aspects on mortality were tested. The major aspect that influences the mortality of small vertebrates is type of habitat in surrounding communication. The most carcasses were found at the ecotone (field – forest), while the lowest traffic intensity here was recorded. Significant differences were found among individual controls of monitoring. Significantly higher level of mortality was found in main than in reference sections.
