Abstract

V originále

Background: The aim of this thesis was to investigate seniors' relationship to modern technology. Asking specific questions through questionnaires distributed to the surgeries of general practitioners, it was examined the ability of seniors to work with a personal computer and the Internet, communicate by mobile phone and pay by payment card. Methods: The examined group included patients aged 65 years or more. The data obtained during the processing of the questionnaires were analytically evaluated and are listed in the tables in absolute (n) and relative (%) frequencies. Acquired calculations are expressed in bar, pie and bar charts, where the data are reported in relative terms. The following statistical methods and procedures were used for testing the statistical hypothesis: Kruskal - Wallis test, Mann - Whitney U test and Pearson's chi - square. Results: 89.2% of respondents own a mobile phone, all of them can receive calls, only 6.4% are unable to independently call. From the sample of respondents who own a mobile phone, 58.4% of respondents can receive and read SMS, but only 33.6% can even write SMS. 66.4% of respondents can not write SMS and 41.6% can not even receive SMS and read. Only 23.7% of the total number of respondents use personal computer, and all except one also use the Internet. From 76.3% of respondents who do not use a personal computer, the majority, i.e. 59.7% would not even want to use it. There is 16.6% of respondents who replied that are not able to deal with modern means of communication (personal computer, the Internet, e-mail), but would like to learn it. Only one third of respondents own a payment card, i.e. 46 respondents (33.1%). A large percentage of respondents who own a payment card (89.0%), withdrawing cash from ATMs. 80.4% of these respondents use a payment card when paying in shops. Only 4.4% of respondents are paying by card on the Internet. The survey proved that seniors' ability to use modern technologies decreases as their age increases, while they are also losing an interest in working with those technologies. Conclusion: The use of a mobile phone and SMS text messaging depends on the age of the respondents and there is a statistically significant relationship. A statistically significant relationship is also between education of the respondents and the use of a mobile phone. Those who do not own cell phone belong to the highest age group. The use of mobile phone is also structured according to the age, where SMS and complex functions are the domain of relatively younger seniors. The use of a personal computer is depending on respondents' age. Also, there is a statistically significant relationship between age of respondents and management of the Internet and statistically significant relationship between age of respondents and the communication via e-mail. There is a statistically significant relationship between age of respondents and paying by payment card, as well as cash withdrawing from ATMs. Payment cards are used by a third of respondents, mostly for withdrawals from ATMs and for payments in a store, while for payments on the Internet are used occasionally. Age is again a factor that affects the use of payment cards.
