In English

The study Adaptation as Whaling: Notes on the Study of Literature on Screen deals with new adaptation methodologies and the possibilities of their use in interpretation of films. Drawing on new approaches from the fields of adaptation theory and intermediality the article examines John Huston's film adaptation of John Melville's novel Moby Dick. The vast narrative of the book had to be rewritten for cinema. The process of adaptation can be seen as a kind of anatomical practice based on cutting the book to pieces and combining elements that would be considered as nonhomogeneous in different contexts. The analysis raises a wide range of issues, such as the question of a new life of an old cultural product, the status of the adapted text and financing of a demanding adaptation project.
