Abstract
The paper ventures into a much called-for but rather underresearched area: reception studies within the translation studies framework. It explores the possibilities for studying acculturation of works of so-called "New Literatures in English", sometimes also referred to by the somewhat problematic term "postcolonial literatures", by the Czech present-day readership. Leaving textual strategies of domestication/foreignization and cultural translation aside, the study is dealing with the actual process of appropriating the translated literary work with its alien socio-political agenda as well as aesthetic values at the level of reception by individual lay readers facing the task of figuring out how the particular work fits within the context of their own personal lives and experience. The material for this study includes primarily reader responses to selected works representing New Literatures in English posted on readers' webs such as www.ctenar.net or www.knihi.cz, and secondarily, for comparative purposes, reviews of the translations published online as well as in printed press.
