TY - CONF ID - 1194301 AU - Krpoun, Zdeněk - Kolářová, Martina PY - 2014 TI - The experience of flow: differences between surfing on Facebook and doing sports KW - flow KW - sports activity KW - Facebook UR - http://www.icap2014.com/ N2 - The aim of the given work is to describe similarities and differences between Facebook use and active participation in sports from the point of view of the flow theory. The research included 214 respondents (109 women), whose average age was 22.53 (sd = 3.00, md = 22). We used a flow multidimensional questionnaire (Flow State Scale – 2) that assesses nine dimensions of flow on the five-point Likert scale. When surfing on Facebook, the respondents were asked about the average length of Facebook use per week and about their attitude toward this social network. Probably the most interesting finding is the fact that, contrary to prior expectations, there is a negative relationship between the flow phenomenon and time spent on Facebook. With regard to the individual dimensions of the flow phenomenon measured by Flow State Scale – 2, "the balance between challenge and skills" and "clear and specific goals" were statistically significantly higher in sport activities, while the dimension called "transformation of time" was higher in Facebook use. Given the current research and theories in these areas possible explanations are discussed. ER -
