TY - CONF ID - 1226459 AU - Strachoňová, Hana PY - 2014 TI - Universal Quantifier as a Free Choice Savior KW - Free Choice Items KW - negative indefinites in Slavic KW - negation KW - modality UR - https://sites.google.com/site/fdslbrno2014/ N2 - We follow the classical approach to FCIs of Kadmon and Landman (1993) - treating Czech FCIs as indefinites with additional strengthening and widening licensing condition: they are licensed only in the contexts where they logically strengthen the meaning of the sentence (compared to regular indefinites). Logical strength is defined in terms of entailment: logically stronger statement asymmetrically entails the weaker one. FCI and n-word are no more competitors for insertion in the context of negated possibility modal, because each form corresponds to different meaning of the proposition. ER -
