Microwave plasma discharges were used to synthesize iron based nanoparticles with content of alpha-, gamma-Fe phases, magnetite Fe3O4 and Fe3C carbide. We used two types of discharges: a) microwave plasma torch operating at atmospheric pressure and b) low pressure (0.5 - 4 kPa) surface wave discharge. Discharges were ignited in argon and nanoparticles were prepared by decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl Fe(CO)5. Pure iron nanoparticles are known to be very unstable on air. To stabilize our samples we investigated an influence of hydrocarbon (methane, acetylene and ethene) or ammonia(NH3) gas admixture on final products. Our samples were analyzed by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy TEM and Raman spectroscopy. XRD analysis showed presence of gama-Fe phase and carbide Fe3C in our samples. Samples with high content of zero valent iron showed better stability on air.
