TY - CHAP ID - 1309367 AU - Spáč, Peter - Gherghina, Sergiu PY - 2015 TI - Democratising Candidate Selection in Romania and Slovakia VL - Neuveden PB - Ashgate Publishing CY - Burlington SN - 9781472450388 KW - Primaries;political parties;Romania;Slovakia;candidates N2 - In more than two decades of post-communist party politics, the use of inclusive selection methods in Central and Eastern European has been episodic. The control of the party in central office and the limited recruitment and involvement of party members appeared to be the rules of the game. In this environment only a handful of parties formally specify primary elections – open to their members – as a means of selecting their candidates. Two important political parties, applied primaries for the selection of its legislative candidates. This chapter analyses the use of primaries in two important parties, the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-Democratic Party (SDKÚ-DS). It aims to identify similarities and differences in the formal rules, organisation and effects of primaries in order to elaborate on broader implications of the analysis and further avenues for research.
