Anotace
Background: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Eastern Europe. However detailed stroke incidence data are not available. Methods: We previously validated the accuracy of coding of stroke diagnoses in the National Registry of Hospitalized Patients (NRHOSP), a nationwide registry of prospectively collected data regarding each hospitalization in the Czech Republic (CR) since 1992. The accuracy of coding of the main stroke diagnosis [International Classification of Diseases Tenth Revision (ICD-10): subarachnoid hemorrhage (I60), intracerebral hemorrhage (I61) and cerebral infarction (I63)] included in a CR national registry was high (91%, 91% and 82%, respectively). We calculated the incidence of hospitalized stroke in the CR using the validated NRHOSP. We calculated the overall stroke incidence and the incidence rates of the three main stroke types: cerebral infarction (I63), subarachnoid hemorrhage (I60) and intracerebral hemorrhage (I61). The results of the Validation study assessing the accuracy of coding of stroke diagnoses in NRHOSP were applied to appropriately adjust the rates from the NRHOSP data. Results: The overall incidence of hospitalized stroke in the CR is 240 per 100 000 population. The incidence of hospitalized stroke according to stroke types I60, I61 and I63 is 8, 29 and 210 cases per 100 000 population, respectively. Conclusions: The incidence data of hospitalized stroke in the CR can be compared to previously reported rates for Central and Eastern Europe. Future studies will expand beyond hospitalized cases.
