Our research is focused on the distribution of strainers/sieves in the Khabur region (NE Syria) during the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic period. The research approach is to look into reasons for the sparse occurrence of this characteristic type of pottery in the assemblages of sites of the mentioned area, in order to address the following questions: (1) Why do strainers/sieves not occur in larger quantities? (2) For what purpose(s) were they supposedly used? (3) Does the proportion of perforated vessels in relation to the other potsherd types vary over time? The existing interpretations concerning the presumed function of strainers/sieves will be summarized and considered on the basis of the percentage of perforated vessels or fragments at the various sites relative to the complementary potsherd types as well as using other scientific evidence. The research is part of a co-project by the Masaryk University and Yale University (2014 -2016) to study the pottery collection which was assembled during the Yale Khabur Basin Survey Project in the 80s and 90s.
