The paper drew on the author's work of a data collector (see http://lldb.elte.hu/team.php). The paper focused on collecting and coding data from the funerary inscriptions of the Praetorian guard that are contained in the Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum VI. As to the specifics of the corpus, the CIL is characterized in that it does not contain dating, which is why modern editions/databases have to be consulted, too (e. g. the Epigraphic Database Roma); however, not even they are flawless. The CIL also contains many inscriptions that are now missing, so that in some cases it is difficult to decide whether there is a datum in the inscription, or not. The inscriptions are mostly formulaic; the relatively low amount of errors together with their type reflects the fact that until the reign of Septimius Severus the Praetorians were recruited mostly in Italy. Five data forms containing several Vulgar Latin phenomena were selected for the demonstration: a consonantal change of s > x (an hypercorrection), confused cases, a technical error, an archaism in vocalismus and a syncope.
