Anotace

El caló es en el español europeo un término polisémico en el que la realidad histórica a veces ha ido de la mano con la realidad imaginada y el mito. Hoy día suele designar ‘la lengua de los gitanos españoles’. Sin embargo, en el pasado solía significar ‘el argot de la delincuencia’ o las dos cosas a la vez, sin que hubiese una línea divisoria nítida. El objetivo de esta contribución será estudiar “de qué se ha hablado cuando se ha hablado del caló” a lo largo de la historia. En primer lugar vamos a dirigir nuestra mirada al pasado y a analizar fuentes para el estudio del caló para ver cómo los autores percibían y caracterizaban el caló y con qué actitudes ideológicas. En casos de obras del pasado son siempre miradas desde el punto de vista de la sociedad mayoritaria, puesto que testimonios desde el interior de la comunidad gitana misma –que vamos a estudiar en la segunda parte de nuestra aportación– no se producen hasta la época contemporánea. Pretendemos pues ofrecer una visión de conjunto de la evolución del término, condicionada por posturas tanto exógenas como endógenas que dependerían de quién lo ha manejado y con qué actitudes ideológicas. Otro objetivo será ver si la actitud exógena de la sociedad mayoritaria ha influido o no en la percepción y en el valor del término, tal como se aprecia últimamente desde el prisma endógeno de algunos autores procedentes de la comunidad gitana en España.

Caló is in the European Spanish a polysemy word that has often combined history with an imagined reality or a myth. Today it usually designates ‘the language of Spanish Gypsies’ but in the past it meant ‘criminal slang’ or the two notions together, without excluding one from the other. The aim of the paper is to study “what was being talked about when caló was being talked about” through the history. In first place we will see in certain detail historical sources for the study of caló. We will be interested in how their authors perceived and characterized caló and what ideological attitudes they used. In the case of older sources these are always focused from the point of view of the majority society because testimonies coming from Gypsy authors were not available until today. In this paper we propose to trace a general overview of the evolution of the term conditioned by exogenic as well as endogenic point of view. We will pay attention on who made use of the word and with what ideological attitudes. Another question would be whether the point of view of the majority society has influenced on the perception and value of the word as it is seen today from the endogenic point of view of some authors of the Spanish Gypsy origin.
