Abstract
The goal of the study herein presented was to find out whether interactants in intercultural communication view themselves and others primarily as members of different national cultures or assertion of their identities varies depending on the context of IC. The partial study results do not allow to arrive at a definite conclusion that identities in IC are multiple and subject to negotiation among the interactants in IC. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that initial interactions of intercultural communicators, their experience with stereotyping, ethnocentrism, and cultural misunderstandings arising in IC influence their communication and negotiation of their identities. The study draws on the theory of of identity negotiation and identity management theory. The research data were gathered so far from over two-hundred and sixty international students of over 20 different nationalities who attended the class of Intercultural Communication at Masaryk University, Czech Republic in 2010 – 2016. Using the method of content analysis , the research analyzed over thirteen hundreds essays in which the students self-reported on their intercultural experience during their one-semester stay in the Czech culture.
