Anotace

Buitenlandse literatuur maakt uiteraard deel uit van een nationale literaire circuit. De dynamiek in het literaire veld wordt onder andere factoren bepaald door de aanwezigheid van literatuur oorspronkelijk geproduceerd in een ander taalsysteem in het buitenland. Het onderzoek dat zich met culturele overdracht van de teksten bezighoudt, wordt vaak literaire transnationalisme genoemd. Lionnet & Shih,de auteurs van Minor Transnationalism (2005), maken een onderscheid tussen verticale en laterale literaire carriere. Literatuur die functioneert in de Engels-sprekende wereld volgt een verticale richting. De laterale beweging optreedt tussen literaire velden die niet behoren tot de metropool van de World Republiek of Letters. In deze bijdrage wordt de interculturele dialoog tussen Zuid-Afrika en Nederland een van de belangrijkste onderwerpen. Nederlandse poëzie is vertaald in het Afrikaans en circuleert dus in de Zuid-Afrikaanse openbare ruimte. Op die manier, Nederlands sprekende schrijvers zoals Herman de Coninck, Gerrit Komrij en Leonard Nolens nemen (in)direct deel aan het literaire gesprek in de Afrikaanse taal. Rebecca Walkowitz suggereert "foreign reading" van de teksten buiten hun taalkundig gebied van de eerste productie. Deze lezingen zijn complementair aan de niet-inheemse opvattingen over poëzie. In de literaire geschiedenis van een nationale of lokale literatuur wordt de aanwezigheid van buitenlandse literatuur in vertaling vereist in een meer "marginale" veld meer aandacht.

Abstract: Foreign literature is of course part of a national literary circuit. The dynamics in the literary field are amongst other factors determined by the presence of literature originally produced in another linguistic system abroad. The research dealing with cultural transmission of texts is often called literary transnationalism. Lionnet & Shih, authors of Minor Transnationalism (2005), make a distinction between vertical and lateral literary careers. Literature which functions in the English-speaking world follows a vertical direction. The lateral movement occurs between literary fields which do not belong to the metropolitan center of the World Republic of Letters. In this paper the intercultural dialogue between South Africa and the Netherlands is a main topic. Dutch poetry is translated into Afrikaans and circulates therefore in the South African public space. In that way, Dutch-speaking writers such as Herman de Coninck, Gerrit Komrij and Leonard Nolens take (in)directly part in the literary conversation in the Afrikaans language. Rebecca Walkowitz suggests a “foreign reading” of texts beyond their linguistic field of initial production. These readings are complementary to the non- indigenous views on poetry. In the literary history of a national or local literature the presence of foreign literature in translation in a more “marginal” field requires more attention.
