VanderMeer spannt die Leserinnen und Leser auf die Folter, anstatt wie ähnlich gelagerte Geschichten spielt der Roman keinesfalls mit schockierenden Bildern. Es gelingt ihm Fragmente diverser Genres zu vereinen: Abenteuerroman, Phantastik, Mediation und Märchen. Das Geschehen kleidet er in eine melodische und abwechslungsreiche Sprache. Der Roman wagt einen Blick in eine weit entfernte – zugegeben dystopische – Zukunft. Doch wie weit ist unsere Realität entfernt von Rachels, Wicks und Bornes Welt? Die Industrienationen und aufsteigenden Entwicklungsländer investieren Unmengen an Milliarden in Kriegsinstrumente, experimentieren mit Biotechnologien und zerstören mit unglaublicher Geschwindigkeit Biotope. VanderMeers Roman ist somit nicht nur die Einladung in eine Welt voller Entdeckungen, sondern auch ein Mahnmal für unseren Umgang mit dem Planeten Erde.

VanderMeer tempts the readers to the torture, instead of like similar stories the novel does not play with shocking pictures. He manages to unite fragments of various genres: adventure novel, fantasy, mediation and fairy tales. He dresses the event in a melodic and varied language. The novel dares to take a look into a distant - admittedly dystopian - future. But how far is our reality from Rachel, Wicks and Bornes world? The industrialized nations and emerging developing countries are investing vast amounts of billions in war instruments, experimenting with biotechnologies and destroying biotopes at unbelievable speed. VanderMeer's novel is thus not only the invitation to a world full of discoveries, but also a memorial to our dealings with planet Earth.
