Abstract
Old industrial regions represent regions that went through huge economic development in the past, but their dominant industries (mostly heavy industries) or dominant companies declined later. These regions have to face new challenge: to transform whole economy and solve many social and economic problems. Their renewal is often based on innovative industries with high value added. The objective of this contribution is to discuss some successfully transformed regions and find some inspiration to regions in Central and Eastern Europe. The contribution shows several examples of successfully transformed regions. It explores three case studies that are Styria in Austria with its capital Graz, Pirkanmaa in Finland with its capital Tampere, and Noord Brabant with its largest city Eindhoven. These regions paid their close attention to research, development and innovations and they are perceived as innovation leaders today. We compare these regions with the Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic that is going through the transformation right now. We try to draw some inspiration from the mentioned regions and find some implications for regions in Central and Eastern Europe.
