Shortly after its publication in England (1622) the play travelled with English itinerant actors to the Continent, where it became a popular piece, especially in the German lands. Johann Christian Neuhuber’s 2011 discovery of Johann Georg Gettner’s manuscript Die Heylige Martyrin Dorothea (1691?), which is a German adaptation of The Virgin Martyr, enables a textual comparative analysis which yields a unique insight into the fate of the Jacobean play abroad and into the practice of early modern German acting companies.
