Anotace

Les études de l’histoire matérielle de l’initiation chrétienne sont traditionnellement liées a’ la relation entre rituel, espace et images. Considérant la pauvreté des sources écrites préservées, cependant, une partie fondamentale de ce processus a été de fait ignoré par la recherche. Il s’agit des objets mobiles et des tissus, peut-e’tre décorés, qui devaient nécessairement participer au rituel. En croisant des données visuelles avec les documents écrits du IVe au VIe sie'cle, la présente intervention souhaiterait donc présenter un certain nombre d’objets liés a’ de tels rituels. Couvert d’images, ces objets deviennent en premier lieu témoins d’une pratique ou’ l’interaction entre rituel et culture visuelle semble fondamentale. De plus, par leur nature plastique a' travers l’emploi de matériaux associés a’ la corporalité, ces derniers devaient également e’tre touchés, en donnant aux rituels une nature véritablement tangible.

Studies of the material history of Christian initiation have traditionally been linked to the relationship between ritual, space and images. Considering the paucity of preserved written sources, however, a fundamental part of this process has been effectively overlooked by research. These are mobile objects, perhaps decorated, which must have necessarily participated in the ritual. By crossing visual data with written documents from the 4th to 6th centuries, the present intervention would therefore like to present a certain number of objects plausibely linked to such rituals. Covered by images, these objects first and foremost become witnesses of a practice in which the interaction between ritual and visual culture seems fundamental. In addition, by their plastic nature through they had to be touched, giving the rituals a truly tangible nature.
