Anotace
Geography as a school subject is facing the crisis of identity. The student’s interest in geography downfalls (KIDMAN, 2018) and we should start to ask ourselves how to change that. In my Ph.D. research, I would like to conduct a study of students’ perceptions of geography and investigate its image. Therefore, it is necessary to synthesize the previous research and summarize the state of knowledge. For the review, I selected 23 studies published as journal articles or books in the years 1979 – 2019. These studies were critically analyzed especially from the methodology and result perspective. The poster will reflect the previous findings and especially discuss used methods and their strengths and weaknesses for research on student’s perceptions of geography. The findings show that the image of geography among the students hasn’t been yet widely discussed and explored in the literature. The previous research was mainly conducted in English speaking countries. The findings differ, generally, the students have a negative attitude towards geography, but it could be improved if teachers deal with interesting and current topics (WEEDEN, 2007, SACK, PETERSON, 1998). On the other hand, the more recent studies by Nick Hopwood show that students have a more positive perception of geography if they are allowed to think and be active in the lessons (HOPWOOD, 2009). The research methods used differ as well as the researched samples. The quantitative methods prevailed, but in a few cases, the qualitative methods paid off and showed promising results.
