KW - glioblastoma KW - PIWI-interacting RNAs N2 - Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor of astrocytic origin. Despite the radical therapy, relapse is a common and relatively early event, with the major mechanism possibly being the presence of glioblastoma stem cells (GSC), able to withstand the therapy and to establish new GBM deposits. PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNA) may have a key role in GSC biology, which are physiologically responsible for the genome stability maintenance in germ and stem cells. Nevertheless, their dysregulation was observed in cancers, including GBM. Identification of GSC-specific piRNA molecules could lead to distinguishing GSC from their differentiated counterparts (non-GSC), enabling their therapeutic targeting. ER -
