Abstract
The purpose of the present article is the explanation of the origin of the Greek designation of “lizard”, saura f. & sauros m. The first step presents the textual and lexicographic documentation. In the second step the existing etymological attempts are discussed. The third step offers a new solution proposing the Semitic origin of this reptile name. Finally, some appealing arguments from Minoan epigraphy are added.
