Balloons flights take place in popular tourist areas with concentrated natural or cultural-historic attractiveness, for example, in European and Mediterranean space. In a broader context, balloon tourism can be defined as a segment of niche tourism. It is set into the macro-niche category of sport and adventure tourism. At the same time, it can be perceived as a part of nature-based tourism. Ballooning itself can be combined with other adventure activities. Romantic dining and gourmet experiences can be incorporated. Motivations for this form of tourism are connected to behavioural transformation and emphasis on experiences. The search for experiences can lead to moving from commodified mainstream types of tourism to tailor-made and unique activities. This form of tourism attracts high-spending tourists. It can significantly contribute to destination development and create a competitive advantage for destinations. Destination image, however, can be affected by any incident in ballooning. To ensure passengers safety, balloon manufacturers must meet the required manufacturing standards and technological parameters. Similarly, hot air balloons operators and commercial balloon pilots are regulated by different institutional and legal instruments valid at a national or international level. ER -
