In my experience as a pediatric surgeon, there is great danger of hitting the dura or sigmoid sinus when blindly drilling into the bone without having first performed a CT scan (see LION surgery;) where the surgeon (Antonio Delle Volpe) drilled 4 holes in a 5 year-old till he found bone where the screw was stable). In fact, Posta et al. state that “For safety purposes, knowing the position of sigmoid sinus is also important.” ER -
