Psychotherapy is an expert activity that demands continuous assessment and feedback – aspects that have been recognized as an essential part of the evidence-based practice. The existing routine monitoring systems focus predominantly on outcome and tend to neglect the therapeutic process. However, data on the process may fill in an important gap by equipping psychotherapists with information on clients’ reactions to psychotherapy sessions. This study aims to develop a brief measure of clients’ sessions reactions. The Revised Session Reactions Scale (RSRS) was used as the basis for the development of the new measure. First, new items were added to the RSRS based on two qualitative meta-analyses of client-reported session impacts (Ladmanova et al., 2021; Timulak, 2007). Second, all items were abbreviated and hindering items were softened to facilitate clients’ sharing of their negative session reactions. Third, a subset of items was selected for a brief version of the measure based on a combination of several theoretical, empirical, and pragmatic criteria. The construction of the measure was primarily based on the network analytic approach, treating each item as the representation of a conceptually distinct type of experience. Nevertheless, the traditional factor analytic approach will be applied as well. The measure is intended to serve as a basis for session-by-session evaluation of the treatment process and may serve as a process-based feedback tool in various therapeutic settings.
