It was an area at the periphery of the Habsburg Empire, yet even after Masarykian democratic reforms it failed to escape its peripheral status. Despite numerous achievements in the area of the social and cultural development that the local inhabitants build on up to this day, there emerge some critical voices stating that the activities of the Czechoslovak administration of that time can be viewed as a form of colonial rule. In my article, I would like to clarify the role that the Czechoslovak authorities played in the eastern corner of our country, and explain why the term 'colonialism' cannot, without gross exaggeration or a substantial shift of the term's meaning, be used for the description of the socio-economic, educational or political-administrative tasks that the Czechoslovaks performed there.
