Le phénomène des restaurations de l’abbatiale Sainte-Foy de Conques est un processus bien exploré, notamment grâce aux études de Xavier Barral i Altet1. Si les grandes lignes du problème sont désormais reconstruites également du point de vue de l’architecture du bâti, certains aspects méritent encore d’être éclairés. Il s’agit notamment des questions entourant l’image « médiévale » de Conques, telle qu’elle fut construite au fil de campagnes successives qui transformèrent ce monument en l’une des icônes de la France « romane ». Plus complexes encore sont les raisons sous-jacentes aux choix esthétiques et intellectuels des divers acteurs qui se sont engagés à sauvegarder ce joyau du patrimoine européen tout en modifiant les coordonnées de manière radicale. Les pages qui suivront se penchent ainsi sur les deux étapes principales de la transformation de l’abbatial au cours du XIXe siècle. La première, sous Prosper Mérimée, de préservation, la seconde, sous Jean-Camille Formigé, de restauration radicale. Cette seconde phase est en effet le lieu d’une véritable réinvention non seulement de l’édifice, mais également du trésor et du culte d’une sainte du haut Moyen Âge, Sainte Foy d’Agen, dans le contexte d’une France catholique à la recherche d’une identité nouvelle dans les années du Premier Concile du Vatican et de la Troisième République.

The extensive nineteenth-century restorations of the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy in Conques are a well-ex- plored phenomenon, notably thanks to Xavier Barral i Altet’s studies. However, several questions surround the invention of the “medieval” image of Conques and deserve further investigation. This concerns, in particular, the understanding of the aesthetic and intellectual choices of the actors who committed themselves to safe- guarding this jewel of European heritage while transforming it into an iconic edifice of “Romanesque” France. The present paper reconsiders the two main periods of the Abbey’s transformation during the nineteenth century. The first, under Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870), of preservation. The second, under Jean-Camille Formigé (1845–1926), of radical restoration. This second phase is a reinvention not only of the building, but also, together with the reborn religious community, of the treasure and cult of a late antique martyr – Sainte Foy. Such a revival must be reassessed against the backdrop of Catholic France in search of a new identity in the years of the First Vatican Council (1869-1870) and the Third Republic.
