In 1888, the Museum Association Brno was founded in response to the growing Czech social and national life. Until 1900, the association’s focus was primarily on archaeological activity and gathering a large collection. Under the organizational leadership of Josef Hladík (1845–1910), a professor at the Brno teacher training institute, the association explored more than 50 prehistoric sites. Hladík also influenced a whole generation of young teachers during his tenure at the teachers’ institute between 1874 and 1900, who at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries created an active group of archaeologists who significantly influenced the development of this scientific discipline in Moravia and gathered extensive and valuable collections. Due to the connection of their professional teaching professions with the interest in nascent archaeology, this discipline is also referred to as “teachers’ science” in the last third of the 19th century.
