TY - CONF ID - 2356883 AU - Provazník, Jan PY - 2023 TI - Compstat as a police management tool in urban (and rural?) areas KW - Compstat KW - policing KW - urban criminality KW - police management KW - Broken Windows Theory N2 - The presentation analyses Compstat, a concept of managing policing first developed in New York City in the late 80s/early 90s by its police department. As more than three decades have passed since Compstat was put into practice and gained a foothold in manyregions worldwide, it is time to evaluate the promise with which it was launched. The presentation first presents the concept of Compstat and frames it in relevant criminological theoretical background, then it proceeds to an analysis of this concept, weighting and comparing its vices and virtues, and creates an outline of recommendations as to its efficiency in urban areas. As this concept was created in a heavily populated area and has been predominantly used in urban surroundings and larger agglomerations, the presentation also contemplates the possibility of it being deployed in rural areas.
