This chapter synthesizes the current debates and “silences” about the media in the Czech Republic, their roots in the development of the media, and the media’s position in society. It discusses the topics of transitive and post-transitive media systems; the shape of the media landscape; and the specifics of journalistic work in the broader framework of the political, economic, legal, and societal development in the Czech Republic. The chapter focuses on key trends, such as media-system transformation, the political-economic framework of media operations, the development of media ownership, the status of journalists, and audience habits. Moreover, it provides suggestions for future developments.
