There is always a tension between the authorial intention and the real impact and perception of his or her work. One of the few possibilities in medieval studies to appraise such an impact or a perception presents the analysis of materiality, including codicology, manuscript transmission, and history of the text. Further possibility, that should be stressed in our context, presents the without exaggeration pathbreaking Helmut Reimitz´s analysis of Frankish historiography, which masterfully combined the approaches of auxiliary historical sciences with theoretical concepts related to identities and strategies of identification by Walter Pohl, underlined the importance of rethinking the manuscript evidence as a specific source of information. Thanks to it, it is clear that the scrutiny of manuscripts and individual copies of the chronicles promises to improve our understanding of their regional contexts and their possible impact on historical consciousness and changing strategies of identification of different social groups. This research is still in its beginnings despite several interesting contributions (e.g., W. Pohl). Even more limited, however, is our understanding of the impact regional chroniclers had in different periods and regions, whereas it seems that to surpass our lack of understanding, the comparison could be the most suitable (or even further the only) tool.
