An interesting performative adjuration formula, consisting of the verbs adiuro and coniuro, has been attested in 52 Latin inscriptions from antiquity to the Middle Ages. This formula has been documented almost exclusively on three different types of inscriptions: Latin curse tablets, amulets, and funerary inscriptions. This formula was originally employed in ancient ‘pagan’ contexts with magical connotations and subsequently adopted more or less petrified in Christian practice, appearing on funerary inscriptions and amulets from the 5th century onwards, albeit with slight variations. Within the context of late Christian funerary inscriptions, there is a notable intermingling of this formula with the conventional syntactic elements characterising epitaphs.
