Hledání podobností mezi prací (nezdravotnického) psychoterapeuta a manželského či rodinného poradce používajícího psychoterapeutické postupy vyznačuje odbornou komunitu v ČR celá 90. léta. Toto hledání podobností a ustanovování hranic a rozdílů se objevilo v 90. letech rovněž v Evropě. Problém je však mnohem starší.
