Abstract
In 151 immunocompromised patients (haematological malignancies with pulmonary disease) bronchoalveolar fluid was examined obtained with bronchoalveolar lavage. In 124 (82.1 %) patinets this contributed to the determination of the etiology of pulmonary disease, we changed or started treatment in 111 (73.5 %) patients and the validity of ongoing therapy was confirmed in 12 (7.9 %) patients. Treatment with antibiotics was started or changed in 79 (52.3 %) patients, with antimycotics in 36 (23.8 %), with antituberculotics in 2 (1.3 %), and with virostatics in 19 (12.6 %) patients; antipneumocystic treatment was started in 19 (12.6 %) patients. In 25 (16.6 %) patients the cytostatic treatment was started or changed. Bronchoalveolar lavage and examination of bronchoalveolar fluid contributed substantially to the diagnostics of pulmonary, chiefly infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients.
