Abstract
Themobilityofheavymetalsinsedimentsandsoilsdependsstronglyonphysicalpropertiesandchemicalandmineralogicalcompositionofsuchenvironments.Fivetypesofsampleswithdifferentamountsofcarbonates,organicmatter,chemicalcompositionandvariousgrainsizeswerecho-sen.ExperimentalsorptiondatafrombatchtestswereevaluatedbyLangmuirandFreundlichtypeisotherms,whichprovidedmainsorptioncharacteris-ticsofsedimentsamplesforheavymetals(Cu,Cd).Inordertosimulatenaturalconditionsmorerealistically,severalleachingcolumntestswerealsoper-formed.Thesamplesorptioncapacitiesunderstaticanddynamicconditionswereevaluated.AllchosensamplesbondedCumoreefficientlyandfirmlythanCd.Distilledwaterwashedoutabout6%ofCuand44%ofCdfromHBS2(quartz-dominatedsamplewith74wt%ofsand-sizedfraction)and6%ofCuand9%ofCdfromHBS6(finer-grainedsamplewithsomeamountoforganicmatterandcarbonates).Carbonatesprovedtobecrucialforthemo-bilityofheavymetalsinnaturalsamples.Freemetalswerewashedoutofporesattheverybeginningofthedesorptionexperiments.Then,weaklyad-sorbedmetals(electricdoublelayer)werewashedoutandfinally,alowstationarymetalconcentrationwasestablished.Suchbehaviourshouldresultinaslow release of small amounts of a heavy metal, which should therefore not represent significant danger to the environment
